Lost pensions

## Two ways to find a lost pension

What it costs depends on which you choose.

Route 1

### Through an FCA-authorised adviser

- **Who it suits:** people who want advice on what to do with their pensions once they are found.
- **Cost:** free to enquire. The adviser firm explains any fees before you proceed.
- **Tracing:** the firm may trace your pensions as part of its advice service, typically where they total £75,000 or more.

Route 2

### Tracing only, with Pension Pie

- **Who it suits:** people who simply want their old pensions found, whatever their size.
- **Cost:** a paid service. Pension Pie currently charges £249 to trace up to five pensions.
- **Advice:** none. Pension Pie tells you what you have and where it is held.

You can also trace pensions yourself, for free

The government’s Pension Tracing Service gives you the contact details for a workplace or personal pension scheme. You then contact each scheme yourself. Find it at [gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details](https://www.gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details).

How it works

## What happens after you enquire

Nothing is passed on without your permission.

1. Tell us what you need Answer a few short questions online, or call us. It takes about two minutes. You
2. We check the details A member of our UK team calls to confirm what you’re looking for. Pensions Advice UK
3. We make the introduction With your permission, we pass your details to an FCA-authorised adviser who specialises in your situation. Pensions Advice UK

Who we are

## We introduce you. We don’t advise.

Pensions are too important for a sales pitch. Our job is to understand what you need, then put you in touch with a regulated adviser who can give you proper advice.

- **We do**listen to what you need and check your details with you.
- **We do**introduce you to an FCA-authorised firm that specialises in it.
- **We don’t**give financial or tax advice, or tell you what to do with your pension.
- **We don’t**manage money or hold your pension.

Do you need advice?

## Questions people ask us

If any of these sound familiar, an FCA-authorised adviser can help you answer them.

- How much is my pension worth?
- What are my options when I retire?
- Should I combine my pensions?
- Is an annuity still right for me?
- Should I take all my money out?
- What are the tax implications?
- What happens to my pension when I die?
- Is a flexible pension the answer?

Tick any that sound like you.

Questions

## Common questions

The things people most often ask before they enquire.

[See all questions](https://pensionsadviceuk.com/questions-about-pension-advice/)

### Do you give pension advice?

No. Pensions Advice UK is a trading name of GAP-GNX Ltd. We are not FCA-authorised and we don’t give financial or tax advice. We act solely as an introducer: we pass your details, with your permission, to an FCA-authorised firm that does.

### Does it cost anything to enquire?

There’s no charge for making an enquiry with us. Regulated advice does have a cost, and the adviser must explain their charges clearly before you agree to anything.

### How do I know the adviser is properly authorised?

Every firm we introduce you to is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. You can check any firm yourself on the FCA Register at register.fca.org.uk.

### Can you find a pension I’ve lost?

An adviser can help trace old pensions and look at them alongside the rest. You can also use the government’s free Pension Tracing Service to find a scheme’s contact details yourself.

### What will I need to have ready?

Anything you have helps: old statements, the names of past employers and roughly when you worked there. Don’t worry if you have very little. That’s common.

### Important information

Pensions Advice UK is a trading name of GAP-GNX Ltd. We are not authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority and we do not provide financial, investment, pension or tax advice. We act solely as an introducer.

The information on this page is general information only. It is not a personal recommendation and should not be relied upon when making decisions about your pension. Whether any course of action is right for you depends on your individual circumstances. When you make an enquiry, we may introduce you to an FCA-authorised financial adviser.

Any advice, recommendation or regulated service will be provided by that authorised firm, not by Pensions Advice UK. The authorised firm will explain its services and any fees to you directly before you decide to proceed. FCA-authorised firms may have their own criteria for accepting clients, over which we have no control.

The value of pensions and investments can fall as well as rise, and you may get back less than you put in.

Past performance is not a guide to future returns. Transferring or combining pensions is not right for everyone and may mean giving up valuable benefits or guarantees. Free and impartial guidance about your pension options is available from the government’s MoneyHelper service, and if you are aged 50 or over from Pension Wise, at moneyhelper.org.uk.
